Edinboro - McKean Ski Group Soon to Begin

The Edinboro-McKean Ski Group is scheduled to begin Saturday, Jan. 8, at Peek 'N Peak in Findley Lake, NY. Many students are looking forward to this year's fun times with the ski group.

The skiiers meet every Saturday in January and February in the front parking lot of General McLane High School. The students fill up two buses and travel north 90 minutes to the ski resort. At "The Peek" students enjoy their time free time learning to ski and having fun with friends on the many slopes at the resort.

The ski group is under the direction of English Teacher, Mr. John Guzik, Mrs. Sandy Webber of Edinboro, and Mr. Milton Robinson of Edinboro. Guzik says that he has enjoyed skiing for 21 years and being a part of the group is a great opportunity for him to continue the sport that he loves. Guzik added that there have been few problems in the past six years including their buses breaking down, students breaking the ski resort's rules, and having things stolen from the lodge.

Seniors Kelly Richards, a snowboarder of four years, and Chris Sayers, a skiier for five, had some things to say about the Edinboro-McKean Ski Group. The two members have participated in the group for four years. Their favorite parts of the trip are having fun with the chaperones and skiing with friends. Richards mentioned one complaint about not having enough time at The Peek, but relaxing in the hot tub at the resort's pool area made up for it. Richards and Sayers will continue being part of the ski group again this year.

Though Guzik, Webber, and Robinson have been in charge for six years, it has not always been so. The ski group was officially started in 1986 by Mr. and Mrs. David Stemmler. Stemmler, a science teacher at GM said, "There was a group before that, but it wasn't organized very well." Other chaperones included learning support teacher Mr. Daniel Kane, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Downey of Edinboro, and Mr. and Mrs. Craig Latimer of Edinboro. Back then, the students and chaperones took one bus to "The Peek" every Saturday. Like the group now, the Edinboro-McKean Ski Group made the trip north to Findley Lake to ski and returned late that night.

Ski passes for the group include free skiing any day or night before December 23 and after the first week in March. The price of a pass is $167, an additional $73 for ski rentals, or an additional $148 for snowboard rentals. The group takes two charter buses each year and must pay $72.50 for transportation for eight Saturdays. The buses leave the General McLane front parking lot promptly at 3 p.m, and return between 11:15 and 11:30 at night. Anyone with questions may pick up information in the front lobby or call Mrs. Sandy Webber at 734-4808.
